DEPUTY CHIEF CONSTABLE SHARES POLICE FORCE CORE VALUES AT TFH LEADERS’ LUNCH 16 Jan 09
Deputy Chief Constable Bernard Lawson spoke at a gathering of church leaders at Grace Family Church on 16th January.
After talking about his personal faith convictions, he went on to say that his leadership is about the Force being a force for good that is trying to do good things and not wrong things. He spoke about the support of the local church for the Walker family following Anthony’s death, and the remarkable effect of the family’s deep faith: the press were genuinely touched. And he was deeply touched and humbled.
He went on to explain that the Merseyside Police Force has four values: courage, integrity, respect and care. In the course of their work officers often have to deal with people who don’t care, so the last value is especially important. Society has fundamentally become more violent and people are more willing to use extreme violence, but the vast majority of people, even in areas that are perceived to be “blighted by crime”, are decent people wanting to live normal lives. the force has 4,500 officers and 2,500 staff covering an area with 1.5 million people in it, so developing partnerships and support networks is important.
The deputy chief constable said that he wanted to see a greater link between the Church and the Force, particularly at the neighbourhood. He challenged those present by asking how many knew their neighbourhood inspector or any of the neighbourhood team: the response was surprisingly low. As he said, “There is much to be done at this level” and he encouraged leaders to begin to link up at the neighbourhood level.
Mr Lawson then introduced Debra Green from City Links, a Christian organisation based in Manchester to share about the “Redeeming Our Communities” event planned for 16th June in the Echo Arena being planned by the police, City Links and Together For The Harvest.
